It would go on to win the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980, and in retrospect, would be considered the song that started a new genre of pop music now known as "yacht rock".

What A Fool Believes has always been one of my favorite songs. So imagine my surprise and delight when, last week (March 27, 2026), young songwriter and musical genius, Charlie Puth, released a new song, Love In Exile, co-written and co-sung with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins! He intended it to be a 2026 version of "yacht rock", and it is a fantastic song, with lush, jazzy chords everywhere. Even though 48 years have passed since What A Fool Believes was written, both Michael McDonald (74) and Kenny Loggins (78) are in fine singing and composing form, and their inimitable voices are instantly recognizable.
