In 1978, the pop music world was transformed when two master songwriters, Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, wrote their masterpiece, What A Fool Believes. It would go on to win the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980, and in retrospect, would be considered the song that started a new genre of pop music now known as "yacht rock".

What A Fool Believes has always been one of my favorite songs. So imagine my surprise and delight when, last week (March 27, 2026), young songwriter and musical genius, Charlie Puth, released a new song, Love In Exile, co-written and co-sung with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins! He intended it to be a 2026 version of "yacht rock", and it is a fantastic song, with lush, jazzy chords everywhere. Even though 48 years have passed since What A Fool Believes was written, both Michael McDonald (74) and Kenny Loggins (78) are in fine singing and composing form, and their inimitable voices are instantly recognizable. For a very enjoyable (and somewhat simplified) description of how he put the song together, here is Charlie Puth's story.

What you hear here is a mashup of me singing the first minute of the song, and then Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Charlie Puth singing the rest. Enjoy!

LYRICS

[VERSE 1]

Love always comes with some heartache that waits
A blindside that you don't always see
Somehow the best things, no matter how great
Aren't always free

[PRE-CHORUS]

What changed? (What changed?) I thought you were in it?
Well, it hurts how you no longer look at me now
Just saying (Just saying), so strange, I’ll admit it
Something like love in exile

[CHORUS]

Love felt like coming home
You were the best I've ever known
We had it all for a while
But now it feels like love in exile
Baby, don't turn away
Let's give our love another day
I used to live for your smile
But now it feels like love in exile

[VERSE 2]

If love was a game I believed we were winning
So it's not hard to imagine my surprise
I thought this love was just the beginning
(Just the beginning)
But for you it was just our demise

[PRE-CHORUS]

What changed? (What changed?) Now lost, in a minute
While I was still so busy in loving you now
So strange (So strange) how we see it so different
Leavin' our love in exile

[CHORUS]

Love felt like coming home (Coming home)
You were the best I've ever known (Best I've ever known)
We had it all for a while
But now it feels like love in exile
Baby, don't turn away (Don't turn away)
Let's give our love another day (Ooh)
I used to live for your smile (Used to live for your smile)
But now it feels like love in exile

[BRIDGE]

Whatever comes our way (Whatever comes)
We can make it work somehow (Make it work somehow)
It don't matter where we've been
I need to know, (I need to know)
Where are we? Where are we now? (Where are we now?)

[CHORUS]

Love felt like coming home
You were the best I've ever known (Best I've ever known)
We had it all for a while
But now it feels like love in exile
Baby, don't turn away (Don't turn away)
Let's give our love another day (Ooh)
I used to live for your smile
But now it feels like love in exile
